Beauty blogger and brand consultant Caroline Hirons is our go-to for everything skincare right now - the lady pulls no punches, knows more brands backwards than most derms and makes the finest cup of tea in town. We know this because we just spent a happy afternoon taking a tour through her personal beauty inventory, meeting the family and getting her heads-up on summer skincare (along with a crash course in eighties rock, which we'll leave for another day). Want more? Visit Caroline at beautymouth.com, where she busts beauty myths and solves skincare woes in her weekly clinic. And maybe wish her many happy returns while you're there - Beauty Mouth turned two last week. Happy Birthday Beauty Mouth, you're our hero.....
Summer beauty: three words... tanned, glowing and hydrated.
Summer icon… Grace Kelly in ‘To Catch a Thief’ is as close to perfection as I’ve ever seen. Classic, timeless, beautiful colours and never dull.
Makeup must-haves... a bronzing powder – I love New C-ID I-glow in Coral – it’s AMAZING. Gielly Green Argan Rescue for working on my hair while it’s slicked back in a bun – which is most of the summer and Caudalie Beauty Elixir for keeping my face blemish free, glowing and refreshed on packed tubes.
Holiday hue ... deep hydrangea blue, it's so uplifting.Summer heads-up... Hampton Sun’s Aloe Continuous Mist and the SPF70. Both are new additions to the range and both are UNBELIEVABLE. Absolute must-haves for anyone planning on going in the sun and definitely anyone with children! And for a general skincare heads up anything made with nano or macro technology - they give amazing results on absorption rates which makes the products much more effective.
Switch your skincare when you change your wardrobe. your products should to be lighter just like your clothes.
Tan: fake or bake... Real – I’m a sun bunny – and a Leo. I feel alive in the sun and look my healthiest with a tan. I’m not talking George Hamilton-esque – but you get my drift…
Perfect summer day... up early before the birds, some quiet time on my own before the house wakes up, and copious amounts of tea whilst sitting in the garden. If I get that - the day is pretty much set up to be perfect.
Hot spots ... in a park, London has the best in the world – and the heat of living in the middle of the city is intoxicating. Or my garden – I love having our own space in such a built-up area. My Mum’s garden too – nowhere relaxes you instantaneously like going home and hanging out with Mum, and any theme park – purely for the joy of seeing and hearing my kids have a great time.
Summer skin savvy... lighten up on your moisturiser – more hydration, less oil. Double cleanse in the evenings to make sure you get rid of the sunscreen that is designed by its very nature to cling to your skin and try and do a clay mask followed by a hydrating mask once a week – get rid of the grime and then replenish. Oh and if you don't wear sunscreen... enjoy melanoma. KIDDING. Lack of SPF may not show up straight away but in 20 years you’ll resemble a croc handbag. And in all seriousness, you are putting yourself at risk from cancer – why would you do that?
Beauty belt and braces... I swear by supplements, I've got cupboards full, but my basics are Omega oils in fish form – my skin flares up if I forget to take them even just for a day, and YOUTH by Beauty Works West to keep my energy levels up.
Skincare souvenirs... I pick up a lot of skincare when I travel, P50v from Biologique Recherche in France – a no-nonsense skin retexturiser/toner/anti bacterial agent all in one. Generic off-the-shelf clay masks from Paris, and pretty much the entire contents of any Duane Reade in New York. Everything seems bigger, cheaper and more enticing from there – don’t ask me why!
